consider how the combination of elements of media language influences meaning and intertextuality

mise-en-scene-

polysemic- invited the audience to make their own views

overtly subverts hegemonic sexualisation of women

film genre parady

bell hooks- inequality and suppression of women

does this video refuse stereotypes and objectification OR does it challenge this

the music video for riptide uses

intertextuality is an important element within music videos to both anchor meaning and create audience gratification. the meaning created can created both preferred and subvert reading for the ideologies and message created from the video.

hegemonic beauty standards reinforced- main character is a woman, has long blonde hair and when ever her face is shown she is always wearing makeup, she is also slim, all of the characteristics fit with hegemonic beauty standards.

in all scenes she is there for presented in a way to highlight her beauty or sexuality, this is most clearly shown in the scene where she takes her swimsuit off highlighting her sexuality. this could be an intertextual reference to films such as Baywatch, where the women are highly sexualised in tight swimsuits, her long blond hair also supports this reference and further reinforces hegemonic beauty standards. this repeated representation of these characteristics and beauty then reinforces stereotypes within the audience, especially when making the same references over time, such as in Baywatch and now in riptide.

in most cases according to stuart hall this would be perceived as the preferred reading, as the representations would be agreed by the dominant- hegemonic view as it has been reinforced so many times.

Even when she is later shown to have smudged makeup she pulled back hair and high key lighting on her face directs the audiences attention to her beauty, focusing on the black round her eyes and red on her lips. these too features are symbols of her feminine and previous shots of the same scene show her to be hegemonic 'perfect'. within the dentist scene the brace is slightly to the side in her mouth and does not cover her teeth, which are hegemonic 'perfect' being straight and white, this then questions the point of the braces and dentist, if not to reflect the fears of the narrator, but also reinforces the dream idealist beauty of the narrator, possibly showing what they hope to look like and gain through suffering at the dentist in an aim to achieve beauty.

polysemic- multi

parady of the sexualisation and objectification of women

lack of linear narrative- montage

very symbolic with polysemic (multiple) meanings

surreal- hyperreality-

credit block at the start- intertextual reference film- not typical of modern music videos

postmodern reference to 70s theme

extreme close up, creates uncomfortable narrative in both the character and audience- swinging high ey lighting intertextual reference to horror films and cinema

post modern- does not indicate an exact time period

warm key lighting of old cinema- brick collage of different themes

voyerism- looking someone without them knowing

slow pan in of the character taking

lyric anchorage- scared of pretty girls- doesn't approach them only watch

red book- polysemic meaning

polysemic ideology of the producer- does it try to make a point of how women have been sexualised within the film industry OR

feels surreal like a dream- lack of narrative- hyper reality

whip pan movement

enigma code- prevents the

gives the impression of a narrative

semiotics- literal interpretation of lyrics

we as the audience are the voyer

binary opposition between the themes of the song being soft and the aggressive editing

we are positioned as the person they are scared of

invited audience interpretation

lack of preferred reading- theme is no clear dominant ideology- invited audience to make their own conclusions

binary opposition and juxtaposition between light running and being dragged under the bed low key lighting only on her face

dark imagery- horror iconography- intertextuality reference to create meaning

superstition- left hand is associated with the devil- audience gratification

12sec close up of her sining- doesn't fit the narrative

lack of consistency in meaning

wes anderson- framing of the suit case

semiotics- signs and signifiers

the style composition and colours are visually engaging

objectification and fragmentation of the female body- hands, legs, back, feet

consistency seen as an obkect- reinforce patriarcal view of women as objects

OR does it subvert this objectification through highlighting

-seen as perfect looking and beautiful but through extreme violence and torture (hyperreality, her nails and and placement is perfect despite her being dragged away and abused)

only consistent element of clear visual narrative is her close up sining slowly declining

velocite

all the fem

femfatile- shes smoking

sexualisation/ fetish

dutch angle tilt or cantered angle- feeling of confusion and uneasy- unsettled and positioned- used when she stops running, on the ocean and

dream like sequence- words dont match the lyrics
