media in the online age

 media in the online age

online media- digital media that can accessible via the internet

social media, online media and digitally converged media have become more powerful than governments.

- Facebook has pulled out from Australia

- this shows social media platform having a battle with the legal system if a government

- the search engine google is blocked within china and is replaced with the Chinese equivalent Baidu.

-In March 2009, China blocked access to Google's YouTube site due to footage showing Chinese security forces beating Tibetans;

- there is inconsistent censorship that did not fit with Chinese law

-VPN

-BLM footage was aired live on social media hen not viable on government run news, they by pass the law

-twitter got rid of trump- he was tweeting and sharing fake news, removing the president of the USA's voice on social media platforms

online media relies on engagement- encouraging user click through and interactions to develop habits where the user will keep returning (e.g. Instagram). this is essential in marinating profit and financial gain

- scrolling tracked and monitored, clickbait and personalised links to click through

-develop habits

-average person spends approximately 116 minutes scrolling through social media feeds every day.

-through third-party cookies, companies are able to access search history and a persons interactions within websites, this results in a are personalised experience on the internet and targeted ads. this will result in uses spending more time on the internet as they are always recommended interactions which best suit them and are always engaging with their personality

never being subject to traditional forms of regulation, online media presents a literally impossible to understand, hyperreal collage of news, fake news, ideologies, hatred, advertising and videos if cats

- within comments on YouTube, there's is a wide range of information form links to hate comments and funny comments

- the government has now introduced warnings when a post contains trigger words, for example things that claim to be informing about corona virus, but are not sourcing their information, a website link will be suggested that points to government reregulated and distributed information that is factually correct.

-  Ofcom works with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport. to regulate the internet

- they are reliant on members of the public reporting illegal, abusive or dangerous content.

there is no differentiation between these forms, leading to a form of hyper convergence with no hope of differentiating between previously distinct forms of media.

- meme culture, music

- social media the news are now hyperconverged as they no longer exist without each other, social media relies on the news to create content, this could be memes or simply reposting other information.

- the news now also relies on the internet and other social media platforms promoting their posts and stories atop gain readers.

-the music industry is also reliant on the internet, this is through music videos on YouTube, social media accounts on Instagram, these advertise their music products from new releases to tours. this promotes them as a product and allows their audience to interact with them and create a fan base. without access to a fan base it is harder for the audience to feel connected to these celebrities, this is often due top a new need for audiences to understand the meaning and process behind new music.

With no impediment to posting, extreme ideologies such as holocaust denial, pro-eating disorders, rape threats and images of abuse can be shared with relative impunity.

- find examples in the news

-conspiracy theories

-coronavirus was engineered as bio weapon in china- due to fake news and false information given by trump and taken on by his supporters, shows conflict in both social media and government

And yet, the internet can potentially collect all human knowledge, can allow the sharing of artistic endeavours with positive impact

-sharing of creative with a positive outlook to entertain

-raise people spirits through the internet- captain Tom

-recognition of peoples achievements

- allows people to interact, important for those who feel isolated
