celebrity and metanarrative
celebrity and metanarrative
celebrity- the attribution of glamour or notorious status to an individual in the public sphere
a concept, music videos encode this is idea of the celebrity being better than everyone else (glamorous and notorious)
celebrities are important
- life is boring- provides escapism (life is magical and better than them)
- style icons- base ourselves on them (look, talk, life)
- give audiences pleasure of social interaction (uses and gratification), talking about the celebrity provides profile, also gives audience pleasure, function and use
- give structure to living life, what to aspire for and creates goals
metanarrative- also known as a grand narrative, referring to an overarching narrative or system of beliefs that help us to make sense of the world (a story about a story)
- celebrities are a way of making sense of our world
- e.g. science- explain the world, religion- provides rules to life to make it simple, marriage- old fashion concept (how metanarratives change over time), Marxism- issues in society are caused by the ruling class to solve this we must fight against oppressors
celebrity as a metanarrative- Lady Gaga, applause (2013)
- first shot- her on mattress on the floor- things being stripped down (possibly poor), reinforced by lack of clothes, high contrast cinematography(emphasis positive + negative) in this shows she is classical and established, indicates glamour and sexual attractiveness, anchored in high key lighting to demonstrate curves of body
- this is offset by scruffiness of hair and background- binary opposition
- to become a celebrity must be comfortable in body
- master shot used (as well in promotion) unflattering (not sexualised but more abstract) celebrity reinforced in the focus of her and the direct mode of her address, connotes confidence
- connotation of fetish and sexual violence, her confidence
- mid shot, show her body and focus on her (hegemonic sexually attractive)
- her head is on a black swan, special difference and magical, as well as being ostracised and pushed out from society
- extremely confident, with a masculine hair style, opposite to start of video
- spot light- connotation of imprtance
