Video Game industry - INDUSTRY    In what ways has ownership shaped the media products you have studied? Make reference to the Assassin’s Creed franchise [15]

assassin’s creed is owned by Ubisoft, a large conglomerate based in France. due to them being a large conglomerate this arguably has impacted the quality of product they produce. this is supports Curran and Seaton's theory of power and media industries. by Ubisoft owning a large amount of companies through horizontal and vertical integration as well as subsidiaries, Ubisoft has built a large conglomerate and as a result are now the 4th largest publicly trading game company in the Americas and Europe. they control a large section of the gaming industry and produce some of the most popular games. this mass domination of the market results in expensive advertising that then boosts the profile of the game and the company. this overall limit competition and prevents smaller or indie gaming companies from reaching a mass audience as it is hard to become established without large funds. this lack of competition overall can result in limited creativity, competition and diversity according to Curran and Seaton. the lack of creativity is due to the games being such high budget they can’t risk the audience not enjoying the game and not buying the product, this results in only certain games being produced such as the assassins creed series that produced 21 games in only 13 years.  this then saturates the market and limits creativity as there are a lack of new ideas to be explored around one franchise.

on the other hand, due to assassin's creed's large budget as a result of being owned by a large conglomerate it allows for expensive advances in design and graphics for the game. for example, in the game there is large amount of fur and hair used on the characters, this requires highly skilled designers and creators and provides a better quality experience for the users. overall having a high budget game like assassin’s creed can only be achieved by having a large conglomerate like Ubisoft to fund its production.

by also having a large conglomerate produce the game it allows for expensive advertising. this mass advertising can then reach a wider audience than indie companies and allow more people to play to game having heard of it. had the company only had a small budget they would not be able to make the well-designed adverts or be able to attend gaming advents to promote their product to a wider audience.
